Atrium Health Ballpark

History

Atrium Health Ballpark opened in 2020 in downtown Kannapolis, North Carolina, providing the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers with a state-of-the-art facility that served as the centerpiece of one of the most transformative downtown redevelopment projects in the Charlotte metropolitan area. The 4,930-seat ballpark replaced the aging Intimidators Stadium (later renamed) on the outskirts of town, and the move to a downtown location represented a fundamental shift in the franchise's relationship with its community — from a suburban afterthought to an urban anchor.

The stadium's design by Populous created a ballpark that punches well above its capacity. The main concourse wraps the entire facility with views of the playing field from every point, and the architectural materials — brick, steel, and glass — give the venue a modern industrial aesthetic that references Kannapolis's mill town heritage. The city was founded as a company town by James William Cannon, the textile magnate whose Cannon Mills operated one of the largest towel manufacturing operations in the world, and the stadium's design pays subtle homage to that industrial past.

The Cannon Ballers serve as the Single-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, and the franchise name is a creative play on the Cannon family name and Kannapolis's industrial heritage. The rebranding from the Kannapolis Intimidators (named in honor of Dale Earnhardt, the NASCAR legend from Kannapolis) to the Cannon Ballers coincided with the new ballpark and created a fresh identity that energized the community. The ballpark has hosted young White Sox prospects taking their first steps in professional baseball.

Atrium Health Ballpark's impact on downtown Kannapolis has been dramatic. The surrounding blocks have attracted restaurants, breweries, and mixed-use development that has transformed the city center from a collection of vacant storefronts into a vibrant destination. The naming rights deal with Atrium Health, one of the largest healthcare systems in the Southeast, reflects the organization's significant presence in the Charlotte metro area. For Kannapolis, a city of roughly 53,000 people, the ballpark has been nothing less than a catalyst for urban renaissance.
