SoFi Stadium

SoFi Stadium is the most expensive stadium ever built, and it does not apologize for it. The $5.5 billion complex in Inglewood, California — financed entirely by Rams owner Stan Kroenke without a cent of public money — opened in 2020 as the shared home of the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, returning the NFL to the nation's second-largest media market after a two-decade absence. The building is not merely a stadium; it is an argument that Los Angeles, the city that let two NFL franchises leave in 1995 without so much as a protest, finally has a football home commensurate with its self-image.

Designed by HKS Architects, SoFi Stadium defies categorization. Its most striking feature is the single-piece, semi-translucent canopy roof — technically not a dome, as the sides remain open to the Southern California air — that covers both the stadium and the adjacent Hollywood Park entertainment district. The roof, made of ETFE, filters sunlight into a soft, diffused glow that eliminates the harsh shadows of outdoor play while preserving the sense of being outdoors. It is neither indoor nor outdoor; it is something entirely new, a third category that only makes sense in a climate where rain is an event and sunshine is the default setting.

Inside, the seating bowl is asymmetrical, with the west side rising higher than the east, a design that maximizes shade while creating a dramatic visual sweep. The Oculus — a dual-sided, 70,000-square-foot video board that hangs above the field like a science fiction prop — is the largest screen structure in sports, delivering visuals with a resolution that makes the action on the field seem almost secondary. The concourses are wide, the finishes are premium, and every detail communicates a single message: this is the new standard.

The Rams and Chargers share the venue but maintain separate identities — different locker rooms, different branding, different game-day atmospheres. The Rams, with their deeper Los Angeles roots and Super Bowl LVI championship won on this very field in February 2022, have established the stronger emotional claim. The Chargers, who relocated from San Diego in 2017 amid fan fury, have struggled to fill the building with their own supporters, often finding themselves outnumbered by visiting fans. The shared arrangement is a business marriage, not a love match.

SoFi Stadium hosted Super Bowl LVI — the Rams' coronation — and will host events during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, cementing its role as a generational venue. The surrounding Hollywood Park development, which includes retail, residential, and entertainment spaces, is designed to make the stadium the anchor of a new urban district rather than an isolated event space.
