Lower.com Field
History
Lower.com Field is the triumphant second act in the story of Columbus Crew SC, a franchise that nearly left Ohio before its community rose up to save it. The $314 million stadium, located in the Arena District of downtown Columbus, opened on July 3, 2021, replacing the aging Mapfre Stadium (now Historic Crew Stadium) that had served the club since 1999 as the first soccer-specific stadium in MLS history. Designed by 360 Architecture and Populous, the new venue is a striking composition of dark metal cladding, expansive glass facades, and a dramatic cantilevered canopy that shelters the majority of seats from the elements.
The stadium's creation is inseparable from the Save The Crew movement, one of the most remarkable fan-led campaigns in American sports history. When former owner Anthony Precourt announced plans to relocate the Crew to Austin, Texas in 2017, the Columbus community mobilized with a ferocity that transcended soccer fandom and became a civic cause. The resulting groundswell of activism, political engagement, and grassroots organizing ultimately led to the Haslam and Edwards families purchasing the club in 2019 and committing to build a world-class downtown stadium. Lower.com Field is, in a very real sense, a monument to the power of passionate supporters who refused to let their club be taken away.
The stadium's design reflects its urban setting and the personality of its fanbase. The Nordecke, the supporters' section at the north end, is a steep, safe-standing terrace that has become one of the most intimidating sections in MLS. The pitch is set below street level, creating a bowl effect that funnels sound downward and keeps the roar of the crowd close to the players. The transparent facade along the west side allows passersby on the street to glimpse the action inside, blurring the boundary between the stadium and the city and inviting Columbus into the experience even from beyond the gates.
Since its opening, Lower.com Field has hosted a steady stream of marquee events, including international friendlies, concerts, and the 2023 MLS All-Star Game. The Crew's victory in the 2023 MLS Cup, clinched at the stadium, added another layer of glory to a venue already rich with meaning. The surrounding Arena District, with its restaurants, bars, and entertainment options, has made the matchday experience in Columbus one of the most complete in the league. Lower.com Field stands as proof that investment in soccer infrastructure, combined with genuine community engagement, can create a venue that serves as the beating heart of a club and its city.
