Building the Brand

A biscuit-themed phenomenon takes shape

The Montgomery Biscuits burst onto the scene in 2004 with one of the most creative brand identities in minor league baseball history. Named after the southern culinary staple, the team featured a butter-topped biscuit mascot that quickly became iconic, generating national media attention and strong merchandise sales from day one. Founding owners Sherrie Myers and Tom Dickson had a gift for building minor league brands, having previously created the Lansing Lugnuts.

Riverwalk Stadium, situated along the Alabama River in downtown Montgomery, provided a picturesque setting for the new franchise. The Biscuits immediately affiliated with the Tampa Bay Rays (then Devil Rays), beginning a partnership that would become one of the most productive in all of Double-A. The Rays' emphasis on player development meant that waves of talented prospects would flow through Montgomery year after year.

Manager Brady Williams took over in 2014 and guided the Biscuits to a 77-61 record in 2015 before leading the team to playoff appearances in 2016 and 2017. The combination of on-field success, creative marketing, and a distinctive brand identity established the Biscuits as one of the model franchises in the Southern League, drawing fans from across central Alabama to Riverwalk Stadium.

The Golden Era

Record-setting seasons and a Rays pipeline

New ownership under Lou DiBella arrived in 2017, and the Biscuits soon embarked on the most successful stretch in franchise history. Brady Williams guided the 2018 team to a 79-61 record and a division title before the 2019 squad shattered all franchise records with an 88-50 campaign—the most wins in a single season in the team's history, powered by the Rays' elite farm system.

After the 2020 pandemic cancellation, manager Morgan Ensberg took over in 2021 and posted records of 62-55, 70-61, and 80-58 over three seasons. The 2023 team's 80 wins cemented the Biscuits' reputation as one of the most consistently excellent franchises in Double-A. The pipeline of Rays talent was extraordinary during this stretch: Wander Franco, Brandon Lowe, Shane McClanahan, Randy Arozarena, and many other future major leaguers all developed at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Biscuits made the Southern League playoffs in nine consecutive seasons through 2024, an achievement that reflected both the Rays' commitment to player development and the franchise's ability to field competitive teams year after year. The combination of on-field excellence and the team's beloved brand identity made the Biscuits one of the premier franchises in all of minor league baseball.

New Ownership, Continued Excellence

OnDeck Partners takes the reins

Kevin Boles arrived as manager in 2024 and immediately made his mark, leading the Biscuits to an 80-win season and earning Southern League Manager of the Year honors. The veteran minor league skipper, who has accumulated over 1,400 career wins, brought stability and experience to a franchise that had thrived under consistent leadership.

The 2025 season saw the Biscuits post a 78-60 record and reach the Southern League Championship Series for the second straight year, only to fall to the Birmingham Barons in three games. Despite the postseason disappointment, the Biscuits' sustained excellence continued to define the franchise.

The most significant change came off the field in December 2025, when DiBella sold the team to OnDeck Partners, a sports ownership group within the Avenue Sports Fund. As the third ownership group in franchise history, OnDeck Partners inherited one of the most successful and recognizable franchises in minor league baseball. Boles returns as manager for 2026, ensuring continuity as the Biscuits enter a new chapter under new ownership.
