Northwest Arkansas Naturals

The Wichita Wranglers
Texas League baseball in Kansas
The franchise's roots trace back to 1987 when the Wichita Wranglers began play in the Texas League. For two decades, the Wranglers called Wichita home, serving as the Double-A affiliate for several organizations including the San Diego Padres and the Kansas City Royals (beginning in 1995). The Wranglers won Texas League championships in 1987, 1992, and 1999, establishing a winning tradition.
By the mid-2000s, however, declining attendance at aging Lawrence-Dumont Stadium and the booming growth of the Northwest Arkansas region presented an opportunity. Robert Rich Jr. and his Rich Entertainment Group, which had owned the franchise since the early 2000s, announced the team would relocate to Springdale, Arkansas, after the 2007 season. The move brought the Royals' Double-A pipeline closer to the organization's Kansas City headquarters while tapping into a dynamic new market.

A New Home in the Ozarks
Building from scratch in Springdale
The Northwest Arkansas Naturals debuted in 2008 at Arvest Ballpark, a brand-new 7,300-seat facility in Springdale that was widely praised as one of the finest venues in minor league baseball. The team's name reflected the region's natural beauty and outdoor culture, and the community embraced the franchise immediately.
The 2010 season was the early highlight. The Naturals posted an 86-54 record—the best in the Texas League—and swept through the playoffs to win the franchise's first championship as the Naturals. That roster was loaded with future Royals stars, including Mike Moustakas, who hit .347 with 21 home runs in 66 games before his promotion, and Eric Hosmer. The 2010 Naturals were a preview of the core that would carry Kansas City to the 2014 and 2015 World Series.
The following years saw a steady parade of talent pass through Springdale. Salvador Perez, Wil Myers, Jake Odorizzi, and Whit Merrifield all made significant stops in Northwest Arkansas, reinforcing the franchise's reputation as one of the most important developmental stops in the Royals' system.

Championships and continued development
The Naturals continued to serve as the Royals' primary Double-A talent incubator through the 2010s and into the 2020s. After the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19 and minor league baseball was reorganized, the Naturals remained in the Texas League as the Royals' Double-A affiliate under the new structure.
The 2021 season was a triumph, as the Naturals won the Double-A Central championship, adding a second title to the franchise's collection. Bobby Witt Jr., the Royals' top prospect and the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 draft, spent time with the Naturals in 2021 before rocketing to the majors, where he became one of baseball's brightest young stars. Vinnie Pasquantino also passed through Springdale on his way to becoming a fixture in the Royals' lineup.
The franchise entered 2026 with Brooks Conrad returning for his second season as manager, leading a staff that combines veteran coaches like pitching coach Larry Carter and hitting coach Andy LaRoche with fresh additions. The Naturals continue to benefit from Northwest Arkansas's explosive growth, with the region's population boom ensuring strong fan support for years to come.
