The Atlantic League Dynasty

Independent baseball at its finest

The Somerset Patriots were born in 1998 as one of the founding members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an independent league that offered a second chance to veteran players and a showcase for those seeking to return to affiliated ball. The Patriots spent their inaugural season as a road team while TD Bank Ballpark (then Somerset Ballpark) was under construction in Bridgewater.

The ballpark opened in 1999, and the Patriots quickly became the Atlantic League's flagship franchise. Under owner Steve Kalafer—a Newark-born businessman, automobile dealer, and Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker—the Patriots built a culture that prioritized community engagement, fan experience, and winning. The results were extraordinary: Somerset won six Atlantic League championships (2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2015) and consistently led the league in attendance, averaging over 5,200 fans per game.

The independent model meant the Patriots' roster was a revolving door of experienced professionals, including former major leaguers looking for one more shot. Sparky Lyle, the former Yankees Cy Young Award winner, served as the team's manager for several seasons, deepening the franchise's connection to New York baseball history.

Yankees Affiliate

A new chapter in pinstripes

In November 2020, Minor League Baseball's reorganization brought a seismic change: the Somerset Patriots were selected as the New York Yankees' new Double-A affiliate, replacing the Trenton Thunder. The transition from independent powerhouse to Yankees farm team was historic—Somerset became the first Atlantic League franchise to join the affiliated ranks.

The timing was bittersweet. Steve Kalafer, who had built the franchise over 23 years, passed away from cancer in April 2021 at age 71, just weeks before the Patriots played their first game as a Yankees affiliate on May 4, 2021. The team honored Kalafer throughout the inaugural affiliated season.

The Yankees' top prospects immediately began flowing through Bridgewater. Anthony Volpe, who would become the Yankees' starting shortstop, was a standout during the 2022 season. Jasson Dominguez, one of baseball's most hyped prospects, also made an impact in Somerset. The franchise proved that its operational excellence—honed over two decades of independent ball—translated seamlessly to the affiliated world.

The Pipeline Matures

Continuing the Kalafer legacy

Under the continued leadership of Jonathan and Josh Kalafer, the Somerset Patriots have established themselves as one of the top operations in Double-A. In 2024, the franchise won the Baseball America Double-A Freitas Award, honoring outstanding minor league franchise operations—a fitting tribute to the culture Steve Kalafer built.

The Yankees have continued to route their most prized prospects through Somerset, including Spencer Jones and other high-ceiling talents. The pipeline from Bridgewater to the Bronx has become one of the most closely watched in all of minor league baseball.

James Cooper takes over as manager for 2026 after leading High-A Hudson Valley to a franchise-record 79 wins in 2025. Pitching coach Demetre Kokoris follows Cooper from Hudson Valley, where the Renegades posted a league-best 2.82 ERA.
