Peterborough United Football Club
Known simply as 'Posh', Peterborough United have built a reputation as one of English football's most exciting attacking sides, a club that would rather win 4-3 than 1-0 and whose ability to unearth and develop goalscorers is the envy of League One.
1934–2005
From Formation to the Fry Era
Record-breaking debuts, scandal, and the Barry Fry years
Peterborough United were founded in 1934 and elected to the Football League in 1960. Their debut season was sensational: the Posh scored 134 goals in 46 games, a Football League record that still stands, and won the Fourth Division title. Terry Bly scored 52 of those goals, a record for a single season.
The 1960s also brought controversy, however. In 1968, Peterborough were demoted from the Third Division to the Fourth after an investigation found the club had made illegal payments to players. It was a scandal that set the club back years. Through the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, the Posh bounced between the lower divisions. The appointment of Barry Fry as manager in 1996 brought chaos and entertainment in equal measure. Fry's flamboyant personality and eye for a deal kept Peterborough relevant, and he later transitioned into a director of football role that he held for years.

2006–Present
The MacAnthony Era
Three promotions, Championship football, and the talent factory
Irish businessman Darragh MacAnthony acquired Peterborough in 2006 and transformed the club's ambitions. Working closely with manager Darren Ferguson, MacAnthony's Posh won three promotions between 2008 and 2011: from League Two to League One in 2008, back up from League One to the Championship in 2009 after a brief relegation, and again to the Championship in 2011. Each promotion was built on thrilling attacking football and prolific strikers.
The Championship proved a bridge too far each time, but the Posh became masters of the rebuild. Every time a star striker was sold — Dwight Gayle, Britt Assombalonga, Ivan Toney, Jonson Clarke-Harris — Peterborough reinvested wisely and found the next one. The most recent Championship spell came in 2021-22, and while relegation followed, the cycle of development and reinvention continues. Darren Ferguson remains the manager most synonymous with the modern club, having served three separate spells in charge.
