Stevenage Football Club

From a Hertfordshire new town side playing parks football to an established EFL club, Stevenage's journey from non-league obscurity to League One is one of English football's most unlikely success stories.

The Non-League Journey

From parks football to the Football League

Stevenage Football Club were founded in 1976 after the original Stevenage Athletic folded. Starting in the lowest reaches of non-league football, the club climbed steadily through the pyramid under a succession of ambitious managers. The pivotal figure was Paul Fairclough, who first took charge in 1990 and led the club to the Conference (now National League).

The 1995-96 season should have been the crowning moment: Stevenage won the Conference title, only to be denied promotion to the Football League because the Lamex Stadium did not meet the required ground standards. It was a devastating blow that galvanised the club and its supporters. After years of further development — on and off the pitch — the denied promotion was finally righted when Stevenage won the Conference again in 2009-10 under Fairclough's second spell, this time with a ground that met all requirements.

Football League and Beyond

Immediate promotion, League One, and the Evans revival

Stevenage did not merely survive in the Football League — they thrived. Under Graham Westley, the club won immediate promotion from League Two in 2010-11, reaching League One at the first attempt. Westley's sides were tough, physical, and well-drilled, and the Lamex Stadium became a fortress.

The club spent three seasons in League One before relegation in 2014, and the next decade was spent in League Two. Stevenage flirted with relegation back to the National League on several occasions, but the 2022-23 season brought a dramatic turnaround. Under Steve Evans, the club won the League Two title in emphatic fashion and returned to League One as champions. It was a remarkable revival that reminded everyone of the club's capacity to defy expectations.
