Stevenage Football Club

Stevenage Football Club are one of the youngest clubs in the EFL, founded in 1976 in the Hertfordshire new town that gives them their name. Their rise from parks football and the lower reaches of non-league to the Football League is a testament to ambition, community spirit, and the refusal to accept limitations. The club won the Conference title in 1995-96 under Paul Fairclough but were denied promotion because the Lamex Stadium did not meet Football League ground requirements — a bitter injustice that took another 14 years to put right.

When promotion to League Two finally came in 2010, again under the returning Fairclough, it was greeted with enormous emotion. Stevenage wasted no time, winning immediate promotion to League One in 2011 under Graham Westley's management. The Lamex Stadium, a compact and atmospheric ground, became a difficult venue for visiting teams, and Stevenage's direct, physical style of play earned results against more fancied opponents.

After several seasons in League One, Stevenage dropped back to League Two and spent a decade there before a remarkable 2022-23 campaign under Steve Evans saw them promoted back to League One as champions. The club's return to the third tier confirmed that Stevenage, despite their relative youth and modest resources, have become an established part of the EFL landscape. In a new town that was originally known for its housing estates rather than its football, Stevenage FC have become a genuine source of civic pride.
