British billionaire Mike Danson, founder of the data analytics company GlobalData, acquired Wigan Athletic in 2024 following the club's emergence from their second period of administration. Danson, whose investment brought much-needed financial stability, has pledged to rebuild the club on sustainable foundations and work towards a return to the Championship. His takeover was welcomed by supporters exhausted by years of ownership instability.

Dave Whelan transformed Wigan Athletic from a Third Division club into a Premier League outfit and FA Cup winner. The local businessman, who made his fortune through the JJB Sports retail chain, invested tens of millions into the club, funded the construction of the JJB Stadium, and oversaw the most glorious period in the Latics' history. His departure and the subsequent sale to overseas owners in 2018 marked the end of an era of stability and ambition.
