Historical Figures
Former Controlling Owner
Peter Angelos, a prominent Baltimore trial attorney who made his fortune in asbestos litigation, purchased the Orioles in 1993 for $173 million. His early years were marked by strong rosters and playoff appearances in the mid-1990s, but the franchise subsequently endured one of the longest playoff droughts in MLB history. Health issues forced Angelos to step back from operations in his later years, with his sons John and Louis managing the team before the sale to the Rubenstein group. Angelos passed away in 2024.
Former Owner
Eli Jacobs, a New York financier, owned the Orioles during the pivotal transition to Oriole Park at Camden Yards, which opened in 1992 and revolutionized ballpark design across Major League Baseball. Financial difficulties forced Jacobs to sell the team in a bankruptcy auction, where Peter Angelos emerged as the winning bidder.
