Current Leadership
Chairman & Principal Owner
Bruce Sherman, a billionaire investment fund manager and former chairman of Private Capital Management, led the ownership group that purchased the Miami Marlins from Jeffrey Loria in 2017 for $1.2 billion. Sherman has served as the controlling owner and chairman, overseeing a rebuilding effort focused on developing young talent through the farm system. His tenure has been marked by a commitment to long-term organizational building, though the team has struggled with attendance at loanDepot Park.

Historical Figures
Former CEO & Part-Owner
Derek Jeter, the legendary New York Yankees shortstop and Hall of Famer, was a minority owner and CEO of the Marlins from 2017 to 2022. Jeter's involvement brought national attention to the franchise, but his aggressive cost-cutting - including trading Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, and Marcell Ozuna - was controversial. Jeter resigned from his role in 2022 citing disagreements with Sherman over the direction of the franchise.
Former Owner
Jeffrey Loria, a New York art dealer, purchased the Marlins in 2002 after a controversial stint owning the Montreal Expos. His tenure was defined by extreme boom-and-bust cycles - the Marlins won the 2003 World Series only to see the roster dismantled immediately after. Loria also engineered the publicly financed construction of Marlins Park (now loanDepot Park) in 2012, a deal that became a flashpoint for debate over stadium subsidies. He sold the team to Sherman's group in 2017 at a massive profit.
Founding Owner
Wayne Huizenga, the South Florida billionaire who founded Waste Management, AutoNation, and Blockbuster Video, was the founding owner of the Florida Marlins. He built a championship team that won the 1997 World Series in just the franchise's fifth season, then infamously conducted a fire sale of the roster, trading away virtually every significant player. Huizenga sold the team to John Henry (later of Red Sox fame) in 1999 before Loria acquired it in 2002.
