The Athletics officially dropped 'Oakland' from their name and enter their second season at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. A new gold alternative jersey with 'Sacramento' in green acknowledges the host city, even though the franchise's eyes remain fixed on Las Vegas for 2028.
In January, the Athletics' applications to trademark 'Las Vegas Athletics' and 'Vegas Athletics' were denied by the USPTO, citing the generic nature of the term 'athletics.' It's a minor but embarrassing setback in a relocation saga that continues to generate more controversy than wins.
The on-field product remains a work in progress as the franchise navigates its nomadic phase. Young players are getting everyday reps, but it's hard to build a culture of winning when the team's identity is in flux and the fanbase is fractured between three cities.
