Current Leadership
Governor & Executive Chairman
James Dolan, chairman of Madison Square Garden Sports, has been the controlling owner of the Knicks for over two decades, presiding over one of the most frustrating eras in franchise history. Despite controlling the NBA's most valuable franchise and its iconic arena, Dolan has been widely criticized by fans for meddling in basketball operations, banning critical fans and journalists, and overseeing a prolonged playoff drought. Recent years have seen improvement under team president Leon Rose.
Parent Company
Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. is the publicly traded entity that owns the Knicks and the NHL's Rangers. The Dolan family controls the company through a dual-class share structure that gives them outsized voting power despite owning a minority of the economic interest. The company also operates the iconic Madison Square Garden arena.

Historical Figures
Owner
Cablevision, the Dolan family's cable television company, purchased Madison Square Garden and the Knicks and Rangers in 1997. Charles Dolan, James's father, engineered the acquisition as part of his media empire. The corporate structure was later reorganized, spinning off the sports and entertainment assets into separate entities.
Owner
Gulf+Western Industries, later renamed Paramount Communications, owned the Knicks as part of its Madison Square Garden holdings for two decades. This era included the Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy coaching eras and some of the most memorable Knicks teams, including the 1994 NBA Finals squad led by Patrick Ewing.
