Oklahoma City Thunder

Current Leadership

Clay Bennett

Governor & Chairman

2006–present

Oklahoma City businessman Clay Bennett led the ownership group that purchased the Seattle SuperSonics in 2006 and controversially relocated the franchise to Oklahoma City in 2008, rebranding it as the Thunder. Despite the bitter departure from Seattle, Bennett has built the Thunder into one of the NBA's model franchises, developing homegrown superstars Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and now Shai Gilgeous-Alexander through excellent drafting and player development.

Historical Figures

Howard Schultz

Owner (Seattle SuperSonics)

2001–2006

Starbucks founder Howard Schultz purchased the Seattle SuperSonics in 2001 for $200 million but grew frustrated with the city's refusal to fund a new arena. His decision to sell the team to Clay Bennett's Oklahoma City-based group in 2006 remains one of the most controversial transactions in NBA history and led to Seattle losing its beloved franchise.

Barry Ackerley

Owner (Seattle SuperSonics)

1983–2001

Media mogul Barry Ackerley owned the SuperSonics during their most successful era in Seattle, including the 1996 NBA Finals appearance against the Chicago Bulls. The Sonics were consistent playoff contenders under his ownership, featuring stars like Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp.
