Historical Figures

James Busch Orthwein

Owner

1992–1994

James Orthwein, an heir to the Anheuser-Busch fortune, purchased the Patriots in 1992 from the Victor Kiam/Francis Murray ownership group. Orthwein had intended to relocate the team to his hometown of St. Louis, but Robert Kraft's ownership of the stadium lease prevented the move. Orthwein sold the team to Kraft in 1994.

Victor Kiam

Owner

1988–1992

Victor Kiam, the Remington electric shaver magnate famous for his 'I liked it so much, I bought the company' commercials, purchased the Patriots in 1988. His tenure was marked by the team's worst stretch of on-field performance, including the disastrous 1-15 season in 1990, and off-field controversies. Kiam sold the team to James Orthwein in 1992.

Billy Sullivan

Founder & Original Owner

1960–1988

William H. 'Billy' Sullivan Jr. founded the Boston Patriots in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. Sullivan was a determined if financially overextended owner who kept the franchise alive through its lean early years, overseeing the team's relocation to Foxborough and renaming to New England Patriots. Financial difficulties from an ill-fated Michael Jackson concert promotion at Sullivan Stadium ultimately forced the sale of the team in 1988.
