Current Leadership

Robert Wood 'Woody' Johnson IV

Chairman & CEO

2000–present

Woody Johnson, heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune, purchased the New York Jets in 2000 for $635 million. His tenure has been marked by ambitious moves — hiring Bill Parcells' protege Bill Belichick (who resigned after one day), pursuing marquee coaches and players, and overseeing the construction of MetLife Stadium. Johnson served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2017 to 2021, during which time his brother Christopher managed the team's day-to-day operations.

Christopher Weld Johnson

Vice Chairman

2000–present

Christopher Johnson, Woody's younger brother, serves as vice chairman of the Jets and assumed day-to-day control during Woody's ambassadorial stint. Christopher has been praised for his accessibility and genuine engagement with the fan base, and has played an active role in key franchise decisions including coaching hires and stadium operations.

Historical Figures

Leon Hess

Owner

1984–1999

Leon Hess, the oil magnate who founded Hess Corporation, owned the Jets from 1984 until his death in 1999. Hess gradually acquired ownership stakes starting in 1968 and became sole owner in 1984. His most memorable moment as owner came when he passionately declared 'I'm 80 years old. I want results now' before hiring Rich Kotite — a decision that backfired spectacularly. The team was sold to Woody Johnson after Hess's passing.

David 'Sonny' Werblin

Managing Partner

1963–1968

Sonny Werblin, a former MCA entertainment executive, led the ownership group that purchased the New York Titans in 1963, renaming them the Jets and moving them to Shea Stadium. Werblin understood the entertainment value of sports and made the franchise-defining decision to sign Joe Namath to a record contract in 1965. His showmanship transformed the Jets from a failing franchise into the most glamorous team in the AFL.

Harry Wismer

Founder & Original Owner

1960–1963

Harry Wismer, a radio broadcaster and sports promoter, founded the New York Titans as a charter member of the AFL in 1960. Wismer's grand ambitions were undermined by chronic financial problems — players' checks bounced, the Polo Grounds drew sparse crowds, and the AFL itself had to step in to keep the franchise solvent. The team was sold to the Werblin-led group in 1963 for $1 million.
