Historical Figures
Chairman
Dan Rooney, son of founder Art Rooney Sr., was the driving force behind the Steelers' transformation from laughingstock to dynasty. He hired Chuck Noll in 1969 and oversaw the franchise's four Super Bowl victories in the 1970s. Dan was instrumental in creating the 'Rooney Rule,' requiring NFL teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching positions. He later served as U.S. Ambassador to Ireland under President Obama. Dan passed away in 2017, leaving an indelible legacy on the NFL.
Founder & Owner
Arthur Joseph Rooney Sr., known affectionately as 'The Chief,' founded the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1933 for $2,500. Despite decades of losing, Rooney's loyalty to Pittsburgh and his warmth toward players and fans made him one of the most beloved figures in NFL history. He lived to see the franchise win four Super Bowls in the 1970s. Rooney passed away in 1988, and the Steelers continue to carry his legacy through the Rooney family's ongoing ownership.
