San Francisco 49ers

Current Leadership

Jed York

CEO & Co-Owner

2008–present

Jed York, the son of Denise DeBartolo York and nephew of legendary former owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr., has served as the 49ers' CEO since 2008 and is the public face of the franchise. He oversaw the construction of Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, which opened in 2014, and the hiring of both Jim Harbaugh and later Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. York was initially a polarizing figure, particularly after the post-Harbaugh collapse, but the team's resurgence under Shanahan has strengthened his reputation.

Denise DeBartolo York

Co-Owner

2000–present

Denise DeBartolo York, the sister of Eddie DeBartolo Jr., assumed ownership of the 49ers in 2000 after her brother was suspended by the NFL. She and her husband, developer John York, have overseen the franchise's transition to Levi's Stadium and its modern era. While day-to-day operations are handled by her son Jed, Denise remains the franchise's co-owner and a key figure in the organization's leadership structure.

Historical Figures

Edward DeBartolo Jr.

Owner

1977–2000

Eddie DeBartolo Jr. purchased the 49ers in 1977 and transformed them into the NFL's most glamorous and successful franchise. Under his ownership, the 49ers won five Super Bowl championships (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, XXIX) and built a culture of excellence that attracted elite talent and coaches. DeBartolo was beloved by players for his generosity and personal involvement. His tenure ended when he pleaded guilty to failure to report a felony in connection with a Louisiana gambling scandal, and he was forced to transfer ownership to his sister Denise in 2000. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

Tony Morabito

Founding Owner

1946–1957

Tony Morabito, a San Francisco lumber magnate, founded the 49ers in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference. His vision of bringing professional football to the Bay Area laid the foundation for one of the NFL's most storied franchises. Morabito died of a heart attack during a 49ers game against the Chicago Bears on October 27, 1957. His brother Vic and the Morabito family maintained ownership until selling to the DeBartolo family in 1977.
