National Hockey League

Ice hockey is played with six skaters per side (including a goaltender) on a 200-by-85-foot rink. Teams score by shooting a vulcanized rubber puck past the opposing goaltender into a six-foot-wide net. Games consist of three 20-minute periods. Minor penalties result in two-minute power plays for the opposing team, while major penalties carry five minutes. Overtime in the regular season is a five-minute, three-on-three period followed by a shootout if needed. Playoff overtime consists of sudden-death 20-minute periods until a goal is scored.
