Geoff Molson, a sixth-generation member of the Molson brewing dynasty, led a family group that purchased the Montreal Canadiens, the Bell Centre, and Evenko entertainment in 2009 for approximately $575 million. The Molson family name is synonymous with the Canadiens, having previously owned the team from 1957 to 1978. Former Owner
George Gillett Jr., an American businessman from Colorado, purchased the Canadiens in 2001 for $275 million. While he oversaw a period of competitive hockey, his simultaneous ownership of Liverpool F.C. and financial pressures from the 2008 recession led him to sell the Canadiens back to the Molson family in 2009.
