The Canucks rank 32nd in the NHL power rankings after trading captain Quinn Hughes to Minnesota in December for Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, Zeev Buium, and a first-round pick. It was a franchise-altering deal that went against Hughes' wishes, and the team has been in free fall ever since.
Vancouver also dealt Tyler Myers to Dallas at the deadline, continuing the dismantling of a roster that reached the second round just two seasons ago. The Canucks' window closed faster than anyone anticipated, and the rebuild timeline is now measured in years, not months.
The return package for Hughes gives Vancouver a foundation to build on. Buium, the 20-year-old defenseman, has shown flashes in 31 games, while Rossi brings scoring punch down the middle. Whether those pieces add up to anything close to what Hughes was remains the central question of this rebuild.
