Historical Figures
Former Owner
Abe Pollin, a Washington D.C.-area real estate developer, was the founding owner of the Capitals. He built the team from an expansion franchise in 1974 and also owned the NBA's Washington Wizards (then Bullets). Pollin sold the Capitals to Leonsis in 1999 but retained the Wizards until his death in 2009. He is remembered for building the MCI Center (now Capital One Arena) that revitalized downtown D.C.'s Chinatown neighborhood.
