Leeds United Football Club
One of English football's grandest and most turbulent clubs, Leeds United won the 2024-25 Championship title with 100 points under Daniel Farke, completing their return to the Premier League and reviving a sleeping giant whose history encompasses Don Revie's golden era, Champions League semi-finals, and a devastating financial collapse.
2004–2018
Financial Collapse and the Long Exile
From Champions League to League One
Leeds United's fall from grace remains one of the most dramatic in football history. Having reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2001 under David O'Leary, the club borrowed heavily against future revenue to assemble an expensive squad. When results faltered and the money ran out, the consequences were devastating. Key players were sold at a fraction of their value, and relegation from the Premier League in 2004 left Leeds with debts of over £80 million.
The decline accelerated. By 2007, Leeds had been relegated again to League One — the third tier — where they spent three seasons before returning to the Championship in 2010. The following eight years were spent in the second tier, with a succession of managers and owners failing to mount a serious promotion challenge. The club's fanbase, one of the largest in England, sustained itself through some bleak seasons, with Elland Road remaining a fortress of noise and passion even in the darker moments.
It took a series of ownership changes — from Ken Bates to GFH Capital to Massimo Cellino to Andrea Radrizzani — before any real stability was achieved.

The Modern Revival
Bielsa, Farke, and back to the Premier League
The appointment of Marcelo Bielsa in June 2018 was a transformative moment. The legendary Argentine coach, revered throughout world football, chose Leeds and the Championship as his next challenge. Bielsa's demanding, high-pressing, attacking style electrified Elland Road and produced some of the most thrilling football seen in the second tier. After the agony of a semi-final play-off defeat in 2018-19, Bielsa delivered the Championship title in 2019-20, ending Leeds' 16-year exile from the Premier League.
Two Premier League seasons followed — a thrilling 9th-place finish in 2020-21 and relegation in 2022-23. Daniel Farke, a two-time Championship winner with Norwich, was appointed to lead the club back. His first season ended in heartbreak at the play-off final, losing 1-0 to Southampton. But the 2024-25 campaign was emphatic: Leeds won the Championship with 100 points, scored 95 goals, and lost just four matches all season. Joel Piroe topped the scoring charts with 19 goals.
Now owned by 49ers Enterprises — the San Francisco 49ers' ownership group — Leeds returned to the Premier League for 2025-26 with Farke at the helm, backed by genuine investment and a fanbase whose passion and expectation remain among the most intense in English football.
