Nuno fights to drag West Ham out of the relegation zone

West Ham's season has been a disaster from the opening day, when they lost 3-0 at newly promoted Sunderland before being humiliated 5-1 by Chelsea in their first home match. Graham Potter was sacked in September after a dismal start, and Nuno Espirito Santo inherited a squad in freefall. At one point, supercomputer models gave West Ham an 89 percent chance of relegation, but a recent run of improved results, including wins over Tottenham and Sunderland, has offered a lifeline. A 1-1 draw at Manchester City on the final day of the latest round briefly lifted them out of the bottom three.

The London Stadium cannot afford a Championship season

West Ham's move to the London Stadium was predicated on Premier League revenue, and relegation would be financially catastrophic for a club that has invested heavily in recent transfer windows. The 62,500-seat venue, the second largest in the Premier League, needs top-flight football to justify its operating costs and commercial partnerships. The final ten matches of the season represent the most important stretch in the club's recent history, with survival worth hundreds of millions of pounds.
