Columbia Fireflies
Born from the relocation of the Savannah Sand Gnats, the Columbia Fireflies light up the BullStreet District as the Kansas City Royals' Single-A affiliate — blending a brand-new ballpark experience with one of baseball's most exciting young farm systems.
The Columbia Fireflies are the Single-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, playing in the Carolina League at Segra Park in Columbia, South Carolina. The franchise relocated from Savannah, Georgia — where it had operated as the Sand Gnats since 1996 — after the 2015 season, with the ownership group attracted by a brand-new $37 million ballpark in Columbia's revitalized BullStreet District.
The Fireflies debuted in 2016 as a New York Mets affiliate, and their early years generated national buzz when Tim Tebow — the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback turned baseball hopeful — played 63 games for Columbia in 2017, drawing massive crowds to Segra Park (then Spirit Communications Park). Pete Alonso, who would go on to become the Mets' franchise first baseman, was also part of the organization during this era.
In 2021, MLB's minor league reorganization shifted the Fireflies from the Mets to the Kansas City Royals, placing them in the revamped Carolina League. The transition coincided with a period of rebuilding, but the team has shown steady improvement, posting its best record in franchise history with 68 wins in 2024. The Royals' deep farm system has begun to channel exciting young talent through Columbia.
Segra Park, nestled in the redeveloped grounds of the former South Carolina State Hospital, has become an anchor of the BullStreet mixed-use development and a beloved community gathering place. Owned by Hardball Capital under managing owner Jason Freier, the Fireflies have established themselves as a vital part of the Columbia sports landscape.
