Fayetteville Woodpeckers
The youngest franchise in the Carolina League, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers debuted in 2019 in a gleaming downtown stadium and have quickly become a fixture of military-rich Fayetteville — serving as the Houston Astros' Single-A pipeline to the big leagues.
The Fayetteville Woodpeckers are the Single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, playing in the Carolina League at Segra Stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The franchise traces its roots to 2017, when the Astros placed an expansion Carolina League team at Campbell University in Buies Creek as the Buies Creek Astros. The team relocated to downtown Fayetteville in 2019, moving into the brand-new Segra Stadium and adopting the Woodpeckers name — chosen in honor of the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species native to the region.
Segra Stadium, built through a partnership between the city of Fayetteville and the Houston Astros under a 30-year memorandum of understanding, has become a downtown anchor for one of North Carolina's largest cities. The 5,200-seat ballpark features modern amenities and has drawn praise for its design and fan experience since opening day.
The Woodpeckers serve as a key early-career development stop for the Astros' farm system, which has consistently ranked among the best in baseball. The team has improved steadily since its inaugural season, posting its best record at 69-63 under manager Carlos Lugo in 2025 — the franchise's first winning season.
Ownership has recently transitioned from the Houston Astros themselves to Diamond Baseball Holdings, though the Astros affiliation and Segra Stadium home remain unchanged. With a strong military community (Fort Liberty, formerly Fort Bragg, is nearby) and growing downtown, Fayetteville has proven to be a natural fit for professional baseball.
