1995–2009
Hillcats & the Pirates
A new name and a winning tradition
When the franchise was rebranded as the Lynchburg Hillcats in 1995 under a new affiliation with the Pittsburgh Pirates, it marked a fresh chapter for Lynchburg baseball. The Hillcats name replaced the Red Sox-affiliated Lynchburg franchise, and the team settled into Bank of the James Stadium (then City Stadium) as its long-term home.
The Pirates partnership was remarkably productive. The 1997 squad won the Carolina League championship, and the 2002 team repeated the feat, establishing the Hillcats as one of the league's premier franchises. The 2009 season brought yet another championship, capping 15 years of Pirates affiliation with three titles and a steady pipeline of talent flowing through Lynchburg on its way to Pittsburgh.
Throughout this era, the Hillcats developed a loyal fanbase that embraced minor league baseball as a community gathering point. The intimate ballpark setting and the quality of play made the team a consistent draw, even as affiliations and rosters turned over with the rhythms of player development.

A Period of Change
From Reds to Braves in quick succession
The departure of the Pirates after 2009 began a turbulent stretch of affiliation changes. The Cincinnati Reds partnered with the Hillcats for a single season in 2010 before the Atlanta Braves took over from 2011 through 2014. Despite the instability at the organizational level, the on-field product remained competitive.
The Braves years produced the 2012 Carolina League championship, the franchise's sixth title. The 2013 and 2014 teams also made playoff appearances, demonstrating that Lynchburg's winning culture could transcend affiliation changes. The Braves pipeline sent several future major leaguers through the Hillcats' clubhouse during this stretch.
Off the field, the franchise changed hands in 2015 when Elmore Sports Group purchased the team from Lynchburg Baseball Corp., setting the stage for the next chapter of the team's history under new ownership and a new major league partner.

Cleveland's Cradle & the Howlers Rebrand
Championships, new ownership, and a bold new identity
The Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) began their affiliation with the Hillcats in 2015, and the partnership quickly proved to be one of the most successful in the franchise's history. The 2017 team posted a franchise-best 87 wins and captured the Carolina League championship, electrifying the Lynchburg fanbase with dominant play from wire to wire.
The Guardians era has also brought significant changes off the field. Dylan Narang purchased the team from Elmore Sports Group in 2024, and in his first full year of ownership, the 2025 Hillcats led the Carolina League with 70 wins and won the franchise's ninth championship — the first since 2017 — by defeating the Columbia Fireflies in the finals.
In February 2026, Narang unveiled the franchise's most dramatic transformation: a complete rebrand from the Lynchburg Hillcats to the Hill City Howlers. Designed in partnership with Brandiose, the new identity features five classic monster mascots — Indy the Werewolf, Victor the Vampire, Murray the Mummy, Daisy the Bride, and Gilly the Creature — bringing a playful, cinematic energy to a franchise with over a century of baseball heritage. Under new manager Erlin Cerda, the Howlers enter their first season with championship momentum and a fresh identity.
