Piedmont Days
A franchise arrives in Kannapolis
The franchise relocated from Spartanburg, South Carolina to Kannapolis in 1995, initially playing as the Piedmont Phillies under a Philadelphia Phillies affiliation. The move brought professional baseball to Cabarrus County for the first time, and the team played at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium (later renamed Northwest Cabarrus County Stadium).
In 1996, the team rebranded as the Piedmont Boll Weevils, adopting a quirky identity that reflected the agricultural heritage of the Carolinas. The Boll Weevils played in the South Atlantic League under the Phillies affiliation through the 2000 season, establishing a modest but loyal fanbase in the growing Charlotte metro area.
The late 1990s brought a sense of possibility as Kannapolis embraced minor league baseball as both entertainment and community identity. Though the on-field results were uneven, the franchise planted roots that would deepen significantly in the decades ahead.

The Intimidators
Dale Earnhardt's legacy and a championship
The 2001 season brought two transformative changes: a new affiliation with the Chicago White Sox and a new name — the Kannapolis Intimidators — inspired by Kannapolis native and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, who purchased a share of the team. Tragically, Earnhardt was killed in a crash at the Daytona 500 in February 2001, just weeks after the rebranding was announced. The Intimidators name became a tribute to his legacy.
The White Sox partnership quickly produced results. The 2005 Intimidators won the South Atlantic League championship, defeating Hagerstown three games to one in the finals. It was the franchise's first league title since the 1988 Spartanburg Phillies and gave the community a signature on-field moment.
The Intimidators spent nearly two decades as a White Sox affiliate in the SAL, developing a steady stream of future major leaguers. The franchise was sold to Temerity Baseball following the 2018 season, setting the stage for a dramatic transformation of both the team's identity and its home.

Cannon Ballers & a New Ballpark
A downtown rebirth anchored by baseball
On October 23, 2019, the franchise unveiled its new identity as the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, a name reflecting both the city's heritage as home to Cannon Mills — once the world's largest textile factory — and its association with auto racing. The rebrand accompanied the opening of Atrium Health Ballpark in downtown Kannapolis, a modern facility built on the former Cannon Mills site that has become the centerpiece of the city's revitalization.
The COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 season, delaying the Cannon Ballers' on-field debut until 2021. The inaugural seasons were challenging, with the young roster posting losing records as the White Sox organization prioritized development. However, the franchise's off-field impact was immediate: Atrium Health Ballpark drew strong crowds and catalyzed a wave of mixed-use development in downtown Kannapolis.
By 2024, the on-field product caught up with the off-field momentum, as the Cannon Ballers posted a 70-61 record and won the Carolina League South Division. Under new manager Jayson Nix for 2026 — a former seven-year MLB veteran — the Cannon Ballers continue to develop White Sox talent while serving as the anchor of Kannapolis's downtown renaissance.
