Decades of Carolina League Baseball
A franchise through many names and affiliations
Salem has hosted Carolina League baseball since the late 1960s, with the franchise cycling through identities including the Salem Rebels, Pirates, Redbirds, and Buccaneers. The team won Carolina League championships across multiple eras — 1972, 1974, and 1987 among the most notable — building a deep baseball tradition in Virginia's Roanoke Valley.
The modern era of Salem baseball began in 1995, when Salem Memorial Ballpark opened as the team's new home. Under the Salem Avalanche identity (1995-2008), the franchise partnered with the Colorado Rockies (1995-2002) and Houston Astros (2003-2008). The 2001 Avalanche won the Carolina League championship, the franchise's first title since 1987 and a signature moment for the new ballpark.
The Roanoke Valley community embraced minor league baseball as affordable family entertainment, with Salem Memorial Ballpark providing a scenic setting against the Blue Ridge Mountain backdrop that would later inspire the franchise's most recent identity change.

Salem Red Sox
A direct Red Sox affiliate and another championship
The Boston Red Sox began their affiliation with Salem in 2009, and the franchise rebranded as the Salem Red Sox to reflect the partnership. Fenway Sports Group, the Red Sox's parent company, directly owned the team, ensuring seamless integration between the parent club and its Single-A affiliate.
The 2013 season was the highlight of the Red Sox era, as Salem captured the Carolina League championship — the franchise's seventh league title and first under the Boston banner. The championship run coincided with the Red Sox's own 2013 World Series victory, creating a feel-good storyline that connected Salem fans to the parent club's success.
The 2021 MiLB reorganization reclassified Salem from High-A to Single-A, and Fenway Sports Group sold the team to Diamond Baseball Holdings in 2023. The Red Sox affiliation continued under new ownership, but the stage was set for a significant identity change.

The RidgeYaks Are Born
An outdoors-themed identity for the Blue Ridge
In November 2025, Diamond Baseball Holdings unveiled the franchise's most dramatic transformation: a rebrand from the Salem Red Sox to the Salem RidgeYaks. The new name celebrates the Blue Ridge Mountains that form the backdrop of Salem Memorial Ballpark, combining "Ridge" (for the mountains) with "Yak" (a symbol of strength and slang for a home run). The mascot, Mac the Yak, embodies the region's outdoor adventure culture.
The rebrand was designed to give the franchise a unique regional identity that celebrates southwestern Virginia rather than simply mirroring the parent club's branding. Despite the name change, the team maintains its affiliation with the Boston Red Sox, preserving the development pipeline that has connected Salem and Boston since 2009.
Under returning manager Ozzie Chavez and veteran hitting coach Nelson Paulino — entering his 29th year in the Red Sox organization and 10th season in Salem — the RidgeYaks open their inaugural season on April 2, 2026 at Carilion Clinic Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark. The new identity brings fresh energy to a franchise with nearly seven decades of Carolina League history.
