The Falcons of Tabuk

Six decades as Al-Suqoor, a modest regional club in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Al-Suqoor Club — 'The Falcons' — were founded in 1965 in Tabuk, a city in northwestern Saudi Arabia near the Jordanian border. For their first thirty-five years, the club existed as a community institution serving Tabuk's relatively small population. Playing in the lower divisions of Saudi football, Al-Suqoor were far removed from the glamour of the professional league, competing instead in regional tournaments and the Third Division. The club's remote location — Tabuk is over 1,200 kilometers from Riyadh — meant limited media attention and modest crowds, but Al-Suqoor provided a sporting outlet for a region with few other entertainment options. The club developed a small but devoted following and served as a grassroots development pathway for local footballing talent.

Climbing the Pyramid

Gradual improvement through the Second Division and First Division.

The 2000s and 2010s saw Al-Suqoor slowly improve their standing in Saudi football. The club gained promotion to the First Division (second tier) on multiple occasions, though maintaining that status proved challenging given the financial disparities between northwestern clubs and those from the more prosperous central and eastern regions. The club's infrastructure remained modest, and the player budget was among the lowest in their respective divisions. Nevertheless, Al-Suqoor's persistence in the second tier demonstrated growing competitiveness, and by the early 2020s the club were a mid-table First Division side with aspirations of further progress. Few could have predicted how dramatically the club's trajectory was about to change.

The NEOM Revolution

A megacity takeover, rapid promotion, and a debut top-flight season.

On December 24, 2023, the Saudi Ministry of Sport transferred Al-Suqoor Club's ownership to the NEOM Company, the entity developing the $500 billion NEOM megacity on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast. The club were rebranded as Neom SC, receiving transformative investment in players, coaching, and infrastructure. French coach Christophe Galtier — whose CV included managing Paris Saint-Germain, Nice, and Lille — was appointed to lead the project, bringing a level of coaching pedigree unprecedented for a second-tier Saudi club. The investment yielded immediate results: Neom SC won the First Division title in the 2024-25 season, earning promotion to the Saudi Pro League. Their first-ever SPL match came on August 28, 2025, a 1-0 loss to Al-Ahli. The 2025-26 campaign represents uncharted territory for a club that existed in near-anonymity for almost sixty years, and the tension between corporate branding and authentic football identity defines Neom's current chapter.
