Innovative Field

Innovative Field opened in 1997 as Frontier Field in downtown Rochester, New York, giving one of minor league baseball's most historic franchises a modern home worthy of its pedigree. The 10,840-seat ballpark replaced Silver Stadium, which had served Rochester baseball since 1929, and its construction marked the beginning of a downtown revitalization effort that would transform the city's High Falls district. The Rochester Red Wings, whose history stretches back to 1899, had earned a venue that balanced modern amenities with respect for one of the longest-running traditions in minor league ball.

The ballpark was designed by Ellerbe Becket and situated to take advantage of Rochester's modest but characterful skyline, with the Kodak Tower — for decades the symbol of the city's industrial identity — visible beyond the outfield. The design features a distinctive curved brick facade along the main entrance, with arched windows and ironwork details that reference Rochester's 19th-century commercial architecture. The playing field sits below street level, creating a natural bowl that enhances acoustics and gives the seating bowl an intimacy that belies the stadium's substantial capacity.

The Red Wings have been affiliated with multiple MLB organizations during the stadium's existence, including the Baltimore Orioles, Minnesota Twins, and Washington Nationals. The franchise's connection to the Nationals has been the most recent and has brought a new generation of prospects through Rochester on their path to the Majors. The ballpark has hosted Triple-A playoff games and All-Star events, and its consistent attendance figures reflect the deep baseball culture of the Rochester market.

The naming rights have transitioned from Frontier Field to Innovative Field, but the ballpark's role in Rochester's identity has remained constant. In a city that has experienced significant economic challenges as its legacy industries — Kodak, Xerox, Bausch & Lomb — have downsized, the Red Wings and their ballpark have provided a point of community continuity.
