Indianapolis Indians

One of the oldest and most respected franchises in minor league baseball, the community-owned Indianapolis Indians have been developing big leaguers at Baseball America's best minor league ballpark since 1902.

The Indianapolis Indians are one of the grand old franchises of American minor league baseball, with a lineage stretching back to 1902. What makes them truly unique is their ownership structure: the Indians have been community-owned since 1956, when more than 6,600 fans purchased 24,488 shares at $10 apiece to prevent the team from being moved out of the city. That grassroots investment, steered for decades by the Schumacher family, has produced one of the most consistently profitable and well-run organizations in the minor leagues.

Victory Field, which opened in 1996 in downtown Indianapolis's White River State Park, was dubbed "the best minor league ballpark in America" by Baseball America in 1999. The 14,230-seat facility replaced aging Bush Stadium and gave the Indians a state-of-the-art home befitting their long tradition. The ballpark's downtown location and modern amenities have made it a central gathering place for the Indianapolis community.

The Indians have been the Pittsburgh Pirates' Triple-A affiliate since 2005, the longest continuous affiliation of the franchise's modern era. Under this partnership, future Pirates stars like Andrew McCutchen, Gerrit Cole, and Bryan Reynolds have all developed at Victory Field. Manager Dean Treanor led the club for six seasons (2011-2016), compiling a 401-319 record and establishing himself as one of the most successful skippers in franchise history.

The 2025 season saw the Indians post an impressive 87-62 record under manager Chris Truby, who enters 2026 with new manager Eric Patterson taking the helm. The franchise's combination of historic pedigree, community ownership, a beautiful ballpark, and a stable MLB partnership makes the Indians a model for what minor league baseball can be.
