Tacoma Rainiers

The Tacoma Rainiers are the Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, playing at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Washington. The franchise has been a Pacific Northwest baseball institution since 1960, providing the Mariners with a steady pipeline of talent for over three decades.

Cheney Stadium, which opened in 1960 and seats approximately 6,500 fans, is one of the older continuously used ballparks in minor league baseball. Named after lumber magnate Ben B. Cheney, who donated the land, the stadium has undergone multiple renovations while retaining its classic character. The ballpark's setting beneath the shadow of Mount Rainier — the namesake of the team — provides one of the most scenic backdrops in all of minor league baseball.

The franchise has operated under various names over its history, including the Giants (1960-1965), Cubs (1966-1971), Twins (1972-1977), Yankees (1978), Tugs (1979-1980), Tigers (1981-1994), and finally the Rainiers from 1995 onward under the Mariners' affiliation. The Rainiers identity pays tribute to the Mount Rainier and also nods to earlier Seattle-area teams that bore the name.

Manager John Russell enters his fourth season in 2026, having led the Rainiers to 86 wins in 2025 — the most in franchise history during the Rainiers era. Virtually every notable Mariners player of the past three decades has played in Tacoma, from Ken Griffey Jr. (on rehab) to Julio Rodriguez, making Cheney Stadium a proving ground for Seattle's biggest stars.
