The Reds Years

A franchise is born on the bay

The Blue Wahoos' origin story begins with Quint Studer, a Pensacola businessman and community advocate who saw an opportunity to use professional baseball as a catalyst for his city's downtown revitalization. In 2010, Studer orchestrated a complex series of transactions to acquire the Carolina Mudcats' Southern League membership and relocate it to Pensacola, while the Mudcats' name and brand continued in Zebulon, North Carolina, under new ownership at a lower classification level.

Blue Wahoos Stadium opened in April 2012 on a peninsula along Pensacola Bay, and from the first pitch it was clear this was no ordinary minor league ballpark. The waterfront setting—with views of Pensacola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico beyond—was immediately recognized as one of the most spectacular in all of baseball.

As a Cincinnati Reds affiliate, the Blue Wahoos served as a key development stop for prospects like Billy Hamilton, who stole 51 bases in just 50 games in 2012 on his way to a record-breaking season, and Jesse Winker. The team captured Southern League championships in 2017 and 2018, establishing a winning culture to match the franchise's off-field excellence.

Transition and Restart

New affiliations and a pandemic pause

The Blue Wahoos' affiliation with the Reds ended after the 2018 championship season, and the franchise briefly became a Minnesota Twins affiliate for the 2019 season. That single year with the Twins produced competitive baseball but represented a transitional moment for the franchise.

The 2020 season was canceled entirely due to COVID-19. In an inspired move during the pandemic, the Blue Wahoos listed their stadium on Airbnb, allowing guests to stay overnight in the bayfront ballpark—a promotion that drew national media attention and highlighted the franchise's creative spirit.

When minor league baseball reorganized in 2021, the Blue Wahoos were assigned as the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, beginning a new chapter. The geographic proximity between Pensacola and Miami made the partnership a natural fit, and the Blue Wahoos quickly became an important stop in the Marlins' player development pipeline.

The 2023 season was a particular highlight, as the Blue Wahoos posted a 79-57 record, one of the best in franchise history. Nelson Prada became the seventh manager in Blue Wahoos history in 2025, leading the club to a .500 record in his first season and returning for 2026.

Off the field, Studer's vision for the franchise as a community asset has been fully realized. Blue Wahoos Stadium hosts year-round events including concerts, festivals, and community gatherings. The waterfront district around the stadium has seen significant development, validating Studer's belief that a well-run minor league team can transform a city's identity.
