Building a Winner

From El Paso to Springfield

The Springfield Cardinals were born in 2005 when the St. Louis Cardinals purchased the El Paso Diablos and relocated the franchise to Springfield, Missouri. The move was catalyzed by John Q. Hammons, a prominent local hotel developer and philanthropist who built Hammons Field as part of a plan to attract a Double-A team to Springfield.

The new franchise immediately became a pipeline for St. Louis's talent-rich farm system. In the early years, future stars including Yadier Molina (who made a rehab appearance), Albert Pujols (rehab), and Colby Rasmus passed through Springfield. The Cardinals' legendary organizational depth meant that virtually every Springfield roster featured multiple future major leaguers.

The 2012 season was the franchise's first crowning achievement. The Springfield Cardinals won the Texas League championship, the first title in the franchise's young history. That team featured several players who would soon contribute to the parent club, continuing the seamless pipeline between Springfield and St. Louis.

The Talent Factory

A decade of development

The decade following the 2012 championship saw Springfield cement its reputation as one of the most prolific development hubs in all of minor league baseball. The franchise's alumni list grew to over 600 players who reached the major leagues, a staggering number that spoke to the depth and quality of the Cardinals' farm system.

Matt Carpenter, who would become one of St. Louis's most productive hitters, was a Springfield standout. Lance Lynn, Shelby Miller, Trevor Rosenthal, and Joe Kelly all pitched in Springfield before becoming key contributors to the Cardinals' 2013 World Series run. Later, Randy Arrozarena—who would become a postseason legend with the Tampa Bay Rays—developed in Springfield, as did Dylan Carlson, Harrison Bader, and Jack Flaherty.

After the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19, the franchise returned to the Texas League under MiLB's 2021 reorganization. In 2023, the St. Louis Cardinals sold the franchise to Diamond Baseball Holdings, ending direct ownership while maintaining the player development partnership.
