Second-season syndrome threatens a return to League One
Oxford United are in serious danger of relegation in their second Championship season, sitting in the bottom three with one of the division's worst attacks. The appointment of Matt Bloomfield as head coach in January after Gary Rowett's sacking has not yet reversed the slide, with three defeats in five matches leaving the U's six points from safety. Only Sheffield Wednesday, who were already relegated in February, have scored fewer goals.
The Kassam Stadium struggles to generate a survival fortress
Oxford's home form has been abysmal, and the Kassam Stadium's open-end design and relatively modest atmosphere have done little to intimidate opponents. The ground, which the club does not own, has long been a source of frustration for supporters who feel it lacks the identity needed to create a genuine home advantage. Plans for a new community-owned stadium at Stratfield Brake represent the club's long-term vision, but surviving in the Championship is the immediate priority.
