Rotherham United Football Club

The Millers are one of English football's most resilient yo-yo clubs, a South Yorkshire side whose modern identity has been shaped by the gleaming New York Stadium and a relentless cycle of promotions to the Championship and relegations back to League One.

Rotherham United are the embodiment of the yo-yo club in modern English football. Based in the South Yorkshire steel town that gives them their name, the Millers have bounced between League One and the Championship with remarkable regularity over the past decade, winning promotions with thrilling regularity but finding the second tier an unforgiving environment each time they arrive. The club's never-say-die attitude and the passionate support of their fanbase have made them one of the most respected clubs at the League One/Championship boundary.

The move to the AESSEAL New York Stadium in 2012 transformed the club's infrastructure. Built on the site of the old Guest and Chrimes engineering works, the modern 12,000-seat ground replaced the crumbling Millmoor, which had been the Millers' home for over 100 years, and the temporary stay at the Don Valley Stadium. The New York Stadium gave Rotherham a venue befitting their ambitions, and it has been a fortress during the club's best seasons.

Under chairman Tony Stewart, who has owned the club since 2008, Rotherham have been promoted to the Championship on multiple occasions — in 2014, 2020, 2022, and most recently via the play-offs or automatic promotion. Paul Warne's tenure as manager (2016-2022) was the most successful in the club's recent history, delivering two promotions to the Championship. The pattern of promotion and relegation has become almost cyclical, but the Millers' ambition is to break the cycle and establish themselves permanently in the Championship.
