Beckham's Dream
From expansion vision to growing pains
David Beckham's dream of bringing an MLS franchise to Miami had been years in the making. As part of his original contract with the LA Galaxy in 2007, Beckham secured an option to purchase an MLS expansion franchise at a discounted rate. After years of searching for a stadium site in Miami's complicated political landscape, the franchise was officially announced in 2018 and began play in 2020.
The early seasons were difficult. Inter Miami's 2020 debut was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the team struggled on the pitch under head coaches Diego Alonso and Phil Neville. The roster, despite including experienced players like Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi, lacked cohesion and consistency. Salary cap violations resulted in sanctions from the league, adding off-field complications to the on-field problems.
Still, the foundation was being built. The club's temporary home at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale served as a placeholder while plans for a permanent stadium complex called Miami Freedom Park took shape. The South Florida market's potential was never in doubt - what Inter Miami needed was a transformative figure to unlock it.

2023–Present
The Messi Effect
The greatest player in history comes to South Florida
On July 15, 2023, Lionel Messi was officially unveiled as an Inter Miami player, and the entire trajectory of the club - and arguably MLS itself - changed. Messi, fresh off winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, chose Miami over offers from Saudi Arabia and a return to Barcelona. His debut goal, a stunning free kick in injury time to beat Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup, was watched by millions worldwide and set the tone for what was to come.
Messi's impact was immediate and transformative. Inter Miami won the 2023 Leagues Cup, the club's first trophy, with Messi scoring ten goals in the tournament. Alongside fellow Barcelona and Argentina legends Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, Messi elevated the quality of play on the pitch while driving unprecedented commercial interest off it. Ticket prices soared, every away match became a sellout event, and Inter Miami's social media following exploded past most European clubs.
The 2024 season brought the Supporters' Shield, as Messi, when healthy, continued to demonstrate that he could dominate MLS. The challenge for Inter Miami is building a club that can sustain success beyond Messi's playing days - transforming the attention and revenue his presence generates into long-term institutional strength. The Miami Freedom Park stadium project, if realized, would give the club the permanent home it needs to become a lasting powerhouse.
