Fresno Grizzlies
Once a Triple-A powerhouse, the Fresno Grizzlies were reclassified as Single-A in 2021 and now serve as the Colorado Rockies' California League affiliate — bringing professional baseball to downtown Fresno's Chukchansi Park with the same energy that made them a Central Valley institution for decades.
1998–2014
Triple-A Giants Affiliate
The golden era of Fresno baseball
The Fresno Grizzlies were established in 1998 as a Triple-A Pacific Coast League franchise affiliated with the San Francisco Giants. The team initially played at Pete Beiden Field on the Fresno State campus before moving into the brand-new Chukchansi Park (then Grizzlies Stadium) in downtown Fresno in 2002. The new ballpark was a game-changer for the franchise and the city.
During 17 years as a Giants affiliate, the Grizzlies were a premier Triple-A destination. The proximity to San Francisco meant that top-tier prospects frequently passed through Fresno, and the ballpark — one of the finest in minor league baseball with its approximately 12,500-seat capacity — drew large and enthusiastic crowds. The Grizzlies won the PCL championship in 2015 (under Astros affiliation), but the Giants years established the franchise as a Central Valley institution.
Chukchansi Park became a catalyst for downtown Fresno's revitalization, drawing fans and economic activity to an area that had long struggled. The ballpark's success demonstrated that Fresno could support high-quality professional sports, and the Grizzlies became one of the most popular attractions in the region.

New Affiliations at Triple-A
Astros, Nationals, and the end of an era
The Grizzlies cycled through two more MLB affiliations at the Triple-A level: the Houston Astros from 2015 to 2018, and the Washington Nationals from 2019 to 2020. The Astros partnership produced the franchise's crowning on-field achievement when the 2015 squad won the Pacific Coast League championship.
The Astros years were notable for the quality of talent that passed through Fresno — Houston's farm system was among the best in baseball during this period, and many of those prospects contributed to the Astros' 2017 World Series victory. The transition to the Nationals brought new prospects to the Central Valley, though the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Behind the scenes, ownership changed in 2018 when Fresno Sports and Events, led by Ray and Michael Baker and Jim Coufos, acquired the franchise. The Baker family's connection to the Colorado Rockies would prove significant when MLB restructured the minor leagues in 2021.

Single-A & the Rockies
A dramatic reclassification and a new chapter
The 2021 MiLB reorganization represented the most dramatic change in franchise history: the Grizzlies were reclassified from Triple-A all the way down to Single-A, joining the Low-A West (later the California League) as the Colorado Rockies' Single-A affiliate. The shift was jarring for a city accustomed to the highest level of minor league baseball, but Chukchansi Park — far larger and more modern than most Single-A venues — gave Fresno fans a uniquely premium experience.
The Rockies partnership has allowed the Grizzlies to serve as the first full-season stop for Colorado's youngest prospects. Manager Cesar Galvez, who has been at the helm since 2023, has provided stability and guided the team to a postseason appearance in 2025.
Ownership changed again in November 2023 when Diamond Baseball Holdings acquired the franchise, joining a nationwide portfolio of minor league teams. The Grizzlies continue to be one of the most visible franchises in the California League, with Chukchansi Park's superior facilities and Fresno's passionate fanbase giving the team advantages most Single-A clubs cannot match.
