A California League Original

From the Fliers to decades of championship baseball

The Stockton Fliers were established as a charter member of the California League in 1941. After a hiatus during World War II (1942-1945), the franchise returned in 1946 as the Stockton Ports — renamed to celebrate the city's status as an inland port — and immediately won back-to-back California League championships in 1946 and 1947. The 1947 team's 95-45 record remains one of the finest seasons in California League history.

Playing at Billy Hebert Field in Oak Park from 1950 onward, the Ports continued to accumulate championships through the decades: 1963, 1965, 1969, 1980, 1986, 1990, and 1992. The franchise cycled through numerous MLB affiliations, serving as a farm club for organizations including the Cardinals, Orioles, Twins, Brewers, and others, but the Ports identity and the community's connection to minor league baseball remained constant.

By the late 1990s, the aging Billy Hebert Field was showing its years, and discussions began about building a modern replacement that would anchor the next chapter of Stockton baseball.

A New Home on the Waterfront

Banner Island Ballpark and the A's connection

Tom Volpe's 7th Inning Stretch, LLC purchased the Ports in 2002, catalyzing the franchise's most significant transformation. Banner Island Ballpark opened in 2005 along the Stockton Channel, replacing Billy Hebert Field with a modern 5,200-seat waterfront stadium designed by HKS, Inc. The move coincided with the beginning of the Oakland Athletics affiliation, creating a partnership that continues today.

The 2008 season was the crown jewel of this era: the Ports won the California League championship with a 9-3 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks, delivering the franchise's 11th league title and its first in the new ballpark. The championship validated the investment in downtown Stockton and demonstrated the team's continued ability to develop winning rosters.

Throughout this period, Banner Island Ballpark served as a proving ground for future A's stars, with numerous prospects passing through Stockton on their way to the major leagues. The ballpark became a community gathering place and an anchor for Stockton's waterfront revitalization efforts.

Development Pipeline

Navigating change while nurturing prospects

The mid-2010s through the present have seen the Ports continue to serve as the Athletics' Single-A development affiliate, though on-field results have been inconsistent. The 2021 MiLB reorganization reclassified Stockton from High-A to Single-A, and the parent club's own relocation saga — from Oakland to Las Vegas — has added uncertainty to the broader organization.

The franchise has endured some difficult seasons, including a 46-84 mark in 2024, but the focus at the Single-A level remains player development rather than immediate wins and losses. The Ports' roster turns over rapidly as promising prospects are promoted through the system.

For 2026, new manager Darryl Kennedy — who brings experience from the KBO's Hanwha Eagles and the Kansas City Royals system — takes the helm alongside returning pitching coach Jim Gott. Banner Island Ballpark continues to provide an intimate setting for fans to watch tomorrow's big leaguers take their first professional steps.
