Decades of Central Valley Baseball

Nine names, countless affiliates, championship tradition

Professional baseball arrived in Visalia in 1946 with the establishment of a California League franchise at Recreation Park (now Valley Strong Ballpark). Over the following six decades, the team cycled through numerous identities — including the Visalia Cubs, Mets, Oaks, and others — reflecting ever-changing major league affiliations with organizations including the Cubs, Twins, Rockies, and Athletics.

The franchise won California League championships in 1971 and 1978, establishing a winning tradition in the San Joaquin Valley. The intimate ballpark setting, surrounded by the agricultural heartland of central California, provided a classic minor league experience that attracted generations of fans.

Through all the name changes and affiliation shifts, the community's connection to professional baseball remained constant. Visalia's location in the fertile Central Valley — equidistant between Fresno and Bakersfield — gave the franchise a loyal regional fan base drawn to affordable summer entertainment.

The Rawhide and a D-backs Dynasty

A new identity and a championship season

The Arizona Diamondbacks began their affiliation with Visalia in 2007, and the franchise adopted the Rawhide identity in 2009 — a nod to the region's ranching heritage that gave the team its first non-affiliate-branded name. The rebrand brought new energy to the franchise, with fresh logos, merchandise, and a distinct local identity.

The 2019 season was the pinnacle of the Diamondbacks era: the Rawhide posted a dominant 83-53 record and captured the California League championship — the franchise's first title since 1978 and only the third in its history. The championship validated the D-backs' player development approach and showcased the talent flowing through their minor league pipeline.

Throughout this period, Valley Strong Ballpark (formerly Recreation Park, then Rawhide Ballpark) continued to serve as the team's home, with periodic renovations maintaining the facility while preserving its historic character. The ballpark's longevity — dating to 1946 — made it one of the oldest operating venues in all of minor league baseball.

Single-A and New Ownership

Reclassification and a fresh chapter

The 2021 MiLB reorganization reclassified Visalia from High-A to Single-A, and the team was placed in the Low-A West (later renamed the California League). The transition brought changes in roster composition, as the Single-A level became the entry point for many recently drafted players rather than the more seasoned prospects who had previously populated the roster.

The franchise struggled in 2023 with a 50-82 record but rebounded to 67-64 in 2024 and 65-67 in 2025 under the steady hand of manager Dee Garner, who enters his fourth season at the helm for 2026. The Rawhide continue to serve as the first full-season stop in the Diamondbacks' development system.

In December 2025, OnDeck Partners — led by Marc Lasry's Avenue Sports Fund — acquired the franchise, bringing new investment and energy. The sale marked the beginning of a new chapter for one of the California League's most historically significant franchises, with Valley Strong Ballpark approaching its 80th anniversary as the home of Visalia baseball.
