Double-A Origins

Nolan Ryan's vision takes shape

The Round Rock Express began play in 2000 as a Double-A Texas League franchise, the brainchild of Ryan Sanders Baseball — a group led by Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, his sons, and the Sanders family. Dell Diamond, a $25 million ballpark built on 85 acres of former farmland, opened alongside the franchise and immediately became one of the finest venues in the Texas League.

The team was named after Ryan's famous nickname, "The Ryan Express," giving the franchise a built-in identity that few minor league teams could match. The combination of a Hall of Famer's name, a state-of-the-art ballpark, and a rapidly growing market proved to be a winning formula. Attendance was strong from the start, as the Austin-Round Rock metro was entering a period of explosive growth.

After five successful seasons in the Texas League, the Double-A franchise relocated to Corpus Christi in 2005 to become the Hooks, while the Triple-A Edmonton Trappers moved to Round Rock and assumed the Express name, giving the community a promotion to the highest level of minor league baseball.

Triple-A Arrives

Growing with Austin

The Triple-A era began in 2005 when the Edmonton Trappers relocated to Round Rock, assuming the Express name and joining the Pacific Coast League. The Express initially partnered with the Houston Astros (2005-2010), developing players like Hunter Pence and J.D. Martinez before they became stars elsewhere. The franchise then became the Texas Rangers' affiliate from 2011 to 2018, a natural fit given the geographic proximity.

Dell Diamond proved to be one of the PCL's top draws, routinely ranking among the league's attendance leaders. The Austin metro's growth from a mid-sized college town into a major tech hub brought thousands of new fans, and the Express capitalized with a strong game-day experience. The franchise was briefly affiliated with the Astros again in 2019-2020 before returning to the Rangers system.

On the field, the Express developed notable talent for both the Astros and Rangers organizations, including Jurickson Profar, Nomar Mazara, and other future big leaguers who honed their skills at Dell Diamond.

The Rangers Partnership

World Series champions pass through Round Rock

The Express re-established their partnership with the Texas Rangers in 2021, and the timing proved fortuitous. The Rangers were building toward what would become their first World Series championship in 2023, and several contributors to that historic team developed at Dell Diamond. The Express served as the final stop for pitchers, position players, and depth pieces who would contribute to the Rangers' October run.

The franchise posted a franchise-record 89 wins in 2025 under manager Doug Davis, reaching the PCL Championship berth for the first time since 2019. Davis moved on to manage the Salt Lake Bees, and Kyle Moore was named the 11th manager in Express history for 2026, bringing experience from the Cubs' Triple-A system.

The Austin metro continues to be one of America's fastest-growing regions, and the Express are well-positioned to capitalize. Dell Diamond remains one of the premier venues in the PCL, and the Ryan family's continued ownership provides stability and identity. The franchise's connection to Nolan Ryan — one of the most dominant and iconic pitchers in baseball history — gives the Express a heritage that transcends typical minor league branding.
