2012–2020
The Skeeters Era
Independent baseball in Fort Bend County
The Sugar Land Skeeters debuted in 2012 as a charter member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, bringing professional baseball to Fort Bend County for the first time. Constellation Field, a 7,500-seat ballpark constructed for approximately $35 million, gave the franchise a first-class home in one of the Houston area's fastest-growing communities.
The Skeeters made an immediate national splash by signing seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens for a brief stint in 2012, generating massive media coverage. On the field, the team was consistently competitive, winning Atlantic League championships in 2016 and 2018 under manager Gary Gaetti. The franchise also employed former major leaguers like Scott Kazmir and Tim Redding, giving fans a chance to see recognizable names in an intimate setting.
Constellation Field quickly established itself as one of independent baseball's finest venues, featuring premium seating, a pool deck, and modern amenities. The Skeeters regularly ranked among the Atlantic League's attendance leaders, proving that Sugar Land's booming population could support professional baseball at a high level.

The Space Cowboys Era
Houston's Triple-A powerhouse
MLB's reorganization of the minor leagues after the 2020 season brought the Houston Astros to Sugar Land. The Astros purchased an ownership stake in the franchise and placed their Triple-A affiliation there beginning in 2021, replacing the Round Rock Express. The team played the 2021 season as the Sugar Land Skeeters before rebranding as the Space Cowboys for 2022.
The Space Cowboys name was an instant hit, blending Houston's NASA heritage with cowboy culture in a way that resonated nationally. Merchandise sales soared, and the rebrand earned widespread praise from fans and media. The team joined the Pacific Coast League as part of the reorganized Triple-A structure.
Manager Mickey Storey has been the only skipper in the franchise's Triple-A history, compiling a 375-351 record through 2025 and surpassing 70 wins in five of six seasons. The 2024 season was the crown jewel: Sugar Land won the Pacific Coast League championship and then captured the Triple-A National Championship, the franchise's first title at the affiliated level. Storey earned PCL Manager of the Year honors for that campaign. Top Astros prospects including Hunter Brown, Framber Valdez (on rehab), and Pedro Leon have all come through Sugar Land. The franchise was sold to Diamond Baseball Holdings in December 2025 but remains an Astros affiliate.
